Passive Intermodulation (PIM)

Knowledge Hub

Are you doing Passive Interference Module (PIM) testing? Knowing the various techniques will help you. Are any of these a problem for you? Understanding the various techniques for PIM testing, how to do PIM-free installations of LTE/5G antennas, or determining PIM sources both in an installation and externally? Here's our top content to help you be successful.

PIM Master MW82119B Overview Demonstration

The new PIM Master MW82119B with Site Master option system demonstration video shows the proper operating and testing procedure for the new system and features the newest capabilities.

How to make a PIM over CPRI Measurement on our BTS Master

Watch this step-by-step tutorial on performing PIM over CPRI measurements using the Anritsu BTS Master.

CPRI Cell Site Architecture, Configuration, and Results

Many cellular networks now deploy a distributed architecture where the traditional radio has been split into a baseband unit…or BBU…and remote radio head…the RRH. The BBU and RRH are typically connected with a fiber link conforming to the Common Public Radio Interface or CPRI.

IQ Fiber Master MT2780A – A Novel Way to Investigate PIM Problems via CPRI

The IQ Fiber Master MT2780A is a PIM and RF analyzer with a CPRI-based solution. The IQ Fiber Master MT2780A provides critical PIM diagnosis across multiple bands and sectors using live traffic. This video will give you a brief insight into the offered features and let you experience the measurement capabilities by running offline measurements that are based on reordered IQ data.

A New Testing Methodology for Diagnosing PIM and RF Interference Problems

PIM Hunter Demonstration

The PIM Hunter solution with patent-pending technology allows a test technician to pinpoint the location of external PIM beyond the antenna. By walking along the arc of the DTP distance from the antenna with PIM Hunter™, the technician can pinpoint the source of the PIM typically within a few centimeters.

Passive Intermodulation (PIM) in In-building Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)

This application note begins with a review of decibel math and insertion loss calculations, followed by a discussion of the impact of insertion loss on PIM performance in distributed antenna systems (DAS).

Pinpointing Sources of PIM on Rooftops and Macro Cell Sites

This application note focuses on finding PIM that is located on a rooftop or tower external to the antenna, also known as PIM hunting. These external PIM sources are much harder to resolve as they require searching over a rooftop or even beyond the edge of the roof.

A New Technique for Measuring Passive Intermodulation Over Fiber Optic Cables

This white paper outlines how PIM over CPRI works and how to get the most of out of this measurement technique. PIM over CPRI is your first step in determining if a site has PIM issues before calling in a PIM mitigation team

Identifying Sources of External PIM

Identifying Sources of External PIM

dentifying the location of external PIM sources has been an extremely difficult problem for mobile operators worldwide. With Anritsu’s PIM Hunter™, PIM Master™ and Spectrum Master™ products, operators finally have the tool set required to precisely identify external PIM sources. Once identified, a variety of PIM mitigation techniques can be deployed to reduce PIM levels and improve system performance.

PIM is a form of interference generated by passive components that are normally thought of as linear such as connectors, cable assemblies, filters, and antennas. However, when subjected to the downlink signals at a cell site, these components can generate spurious signals that raise the receiver noise floor and reduce site performance. PIM Master is a specialized test instrument able to measure system linearity and identify fault locations both inside the cable system and beyond the antenna.
